42294 Private Bryan J. Petersen W Company (RNZIR)
Killed in Action; 14 September 1968
Private Bryan Peterson was a rifleman in 3 Platoon, W Company, which was a company of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR) attached to 4RAR. Because of the attachment of both W and V Companies of the RNZIR, 4RAR was re-rolled as 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) during its tours in South Vietnam.
During Operation HAWKESBURY in Long Khan Province on 14 September 1968, 3 Platoon, W Company accompanied by a tracker team, had been moving through very thick, two metre high elephant grass with visibility of only a few meters. Suddenly a single burst of fire killed Bryan. It was believed the fire may have come from a single sniper hiding in a spider hole. A counter attack was launched and the area raked with fire but nothing but a pair of Ho Chi Minh sandals was found. Some time later the platoon found a blood trail, so it was possible that they had wounded the sniper as he fled.
