Kevin George CASSON
Mentioned In Dispatches
Medal for Gallantry
Private Kevin Casson enlisted in the Australian Army on 08 July 1970, and was allotted to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He joined 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment in March 1971, and arrived in South Vietnam with the Battalion on 22 May 1971.

On 21 September 1971, in Phouc Tuy Province, Private Cassonís company attacked a bunker system occupied by elements of the 33rd North Vietnamese Army Regiment and came under intense enemy fire. Three members of his section were hit and Private Casson moved forward into the fire lane in which the three men lay. On reaching his comrades, he protected them with his own body while he ascertained the extent of their wounds. Having satisfied himself that all three were dead, Private Casson calmly removed the machine gun from beneath the body of a dead comrade and withdrew with it to the position occupied by his platoon commander.

Private Cassonís courage and steadiness in a critical situation greatly encouraged the remainder of his section and the recovery of the machine gun contributed markedly to the successful extraction of the remaining wounded. His actions reflect great credit upon himself, his Regiment and the Australian Army.
