Richard John FOSTER
Mentioned In Dispatches
Private Richard Foster joined the Australian Army as a National Serviceman on 12 July 1967. After recruit and corps training he was posted as a rifleman to D Company, 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment in Enoggera on 13 December 1967. He proceeded on active service with the unit in May 1968. After serving as a rifleman for a short period Private Foster attended a unit course for stretcher bearers and became stretcher bearer for 12 Platoon, D Company.

At 1230 hours on 08 October 1968, 12 Platoon was ambushed by a group of enemy and sustained several casualties. Although Private Foster was not involved in the initial contact he immediately moved forward in spite of heavy enemy fire and with complete disregard for his own safety began to treat the wounded. He continued to treat and comfort them throughout the contact until the enemy had been driven off. He then remained with them until they were evacuated.

By his gallant and unselfish actions Private Foster rendered valuable first aid to his comrades and displayed courage of the highest order. His calmness under fire and his consideration for the wounded were an inspiration to the remainder of the platoon.
