Today we mourn the death of Lt Michael Kenneth Fussell, an officer of the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) [4RAR (Cdo)].
Lt Fussell was killed in action in Afghanistan on 27 November 2008. Two of his soldiers were also wounded in action but were returned to duty.
Lt Fussell’s team was conducting a dismounted patrol when struck by an Improvised Explosive Device.
Lt Fussell died in the service of the Battalion whilst defending the families, the community and the people of Australia whilst at the same time endeavouring to bring peace to the war torn country of Afghanistan. His task was not as a participant in a civil war or a war of invasion but a war against fanaticism and global terrorism.
Lt Fussell, a warrior of an Army respected by friend and foe alike, was born in Coffs Harbour NSW on 27 November 1983 and he enlisted into the Army in January 2002. He was appointed a Staff Cadet Officer at the Australian Defence Academy where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree and developed a keen interest in sport favouring Rugby Union.
He graduated in 2005 and was commissioned as an officer into the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery and began his service with A Field Battery, 4th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery where he fulfilled a number of junior officer roles. During his time with A Field Battery, he completed a parachutist course which presumably inspired his ambition to become a Special Forces warrior.
During 2006 and 2007 he deployed to Timor Leste and participated in Operation ASTUTE.
In January 2008 Lt Fussell was posted into 4th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment as a Joint Offensive Support Team Commander. He was a platoon commander for the Advanced Infantry Course at the School of Infantry at Singleton NSW and completed the Joint Terminal Attack Controllers Course (JTAC).
Lt Fussell was awarded the Australian Service Medal with Clasp, Timor Leste and the Australian Defence Medal. He will of course, be awarded campaign medals for his service with 4RAR (Cdo) in Afghanistan.
Lt Fussell was single and his brother Daniel is a Lieutenant with 1st Field Regiment RAA, in Brisbane.
Our thoughts are with Michael, his family, his fellow warriors and his friends as we thank them for the privilege of knowing Michael. Michael was a man of integrity and determination. Michael died whilst serving his country and that will never be forgotten. His loss is heavily felt by those of the 4RAR Associations of Australia and we will never forget his name, his deeds, or his sacrifice.
REST IN PEACE BOLD WARRIOR

Lt Michael Fussell
