On Wednesday 15 August 2012, 50 students from the Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, Tweed Heads visited the Gold Coast War Museum. The students, under the care of their teachers and the honorary curator and 4 RAR Assoc Qld Committee Member Bob Meehan OAM, were tasked with answering 20 questions concerning the various displays including the 4 RAR Annex within the museum.
The questions posed ensure that each group of students are compelled to visit all the areas of the museum and to study all displays. At the conclusion, students are invited to ask questions of Bob concerning the museum and oft times, about the military service of the museum guides who assist Bob with the schools. The owner of the museum Mr Vic Coote, presented the Lindisfarne Grammar School with a gift of the trilogy of books written by Bob, which were launched at the Tweed Heads Coolangatta RSL Sub Branch on Saturday 11 August.
On Tuesday 04 September, Bob hosted students from Murwillumbah High School who also received a gift of Bobís books.
It is anticipated that at least 30 visits by school groups will be recorded this year; an increase of 10 from last year. The museum helps the students with their studies of history, geography and social science, but also introduces an understanding of war and of those who take part in war.
Although not intentionally directed as part of their studies, students also take away a history of 4 RAR and an understanding of those who served in it and of those units and soldiers who supported the Battalion in all wars. Thus the name of 4 RAR is maintained.
