Private John Richard Tinkham
Killed in Action; 20 October 1968
Private John Tinkham aged 21 from Koo-Wee-Rup Victoria was called up for National Service on 19 April 1967. John was working as a clerk after he had passed his Leaving Certificate when his call up notice arrived. He sailed for South Vietnam with 4RAR in May 1968.
During Operation CAPITAL in Phuoc Tuy Province on 20 October 1969, John was a forward scout with 12 Platoon and, with a tracker team, was checking tracks for sign of movement when a single shot from an enemy sniper hit John and killed him.
Operation CAPITAL was a two phase operation that kept 4 RAR in the field for 48 days with only a three day break.
