43349 Private Keith R. Hurman W Company (RNZIR)
Killed in Action; 11 January 1969
Private Keith Hurman was a rifleman in 3 Platoon, W Company, which was a company of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR). Because of the attachment of both W and V Companies of the RNZIR, 4RAR was re-rolled as 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) during its tours in South Vietnam.
During Operation GOODWOOD 2 in Bien Hoa Province on 11 January 1969, 3 Platoon, W Company had harboured for the night when noises were heard and after being challenged a figure scrambled away though the undergrowth. Some two hours later, three members of the centre section and other members of the platoon heard movement to their front. The section fired a Claymore mine and followed up with machine gun fire. Other sentries had also heard the noises and they also opened fire. When the firing stopped, Keith was found to be badly wounded in the head and groin and unfortunately died within minutes of being found.
