Private Keith Michael Kingston-Powles
Killed in Action; 21 September 1971
Private Keith Kingston-Powles, aged 24, originally from Poplar, England, was a carpenter prior to enlisting in the Australian Regular Amy. He was posted to 4RAR and sailed with the Battalion to South Vietnam in May 1971.
During Operation IVANHOE in Phuoc Tuy Province, on 21 September 1971, D Company was assaulting a heavily defended enemy bunker system during the battle of Nui Le. 11 Platoon was moving forward in the assault with 6 Section on the left flank when the section was hit by heavy, sustained automatic fire from several mutually supporting bunkers. After the initial burst of enemy fire, Keith returned fire with his machine gun and fired approximately fifty rounds but was killed a few moments later.
