The Grade 7 students, and a student from Grade 6 of The Helensvale State School, Queensland, display a patriotism to their country and the Australian military forces engaged in conflict overseas, specifically 4 RAR (Cdo) , through their letters to these Australian soldiers.
This page, and those that will subsequently be added, are 4 RAR Associations of Australia's tribute to all those students, their parents, and the teachers of Helensvale State School.
All former members of 4 RAR and 4 RAR/NZ salute you for your patriotism.
All serving members of 4 RAR (Commando) salute you for your patriotism; your letters, thoughts, well wishes and support.

Helensvale State School Grade 7 students . . . . The 4 RAR Associations of Australia thank you all.

On Tuesday, 2 December 2008 in the House of Representatives, Parliament House, Canberra ACT, the Federal Member for Fadden, Qld; LP, Mr Stuart Rowland Robert addressed the House in tribute to Lieutenant Michael Fussell, 4 RAR (Cdo) who was Killed In Action in Afghanistan on 27 November 2008.
Included in his address was a reading of a letter sent to 4 RAR (Cdo) by a Grade 7 student of Helensvale State School, Jake Gould of Class 7W.
Jake's letter is reproduced below.

Dear soldier,

My name is Jake but my friends call me Big Red which is weird because Iím not big and my hair is brown with blond bits. I think itís because of my big muscles, (narr Iím kidding my muscles arenít that big). This year Iím in year 7 and Iím actually enjoying it. The big year 7 test was on and it was a bit hard but I think I pulled it off. If thereís 3 things I enjoy doing they would have to be skate park, hanging with friends and rugby league and union. The skate park is so much fun on bike and scooter. Iím getting a bike soon. It will be the same as Barryís also known as Ryan.

Ryan is my best friend (one of a million). Ryan is a good friend with a nickname Barry. My other three best friends are Spasm, Big Blue and Timmy. Spasmís real name is Cam and Big Blue is Dean. Timmy doesnít have a nickname.

Anyway, I would like to hear [about] the life of an army man. What are the grounds like? Because I can picture them quite hilly. When you get told to go out are you scared? I think that would be one of the most scariest things you could do thatís why I truly look up to you guys. What type of weapons do you use and are they hard to fire? I donít know if you have kids of your own but if you do you should know that they would think the world of you. Well if my Dad was over there that is how I would think.

I donít know how you feel but if you get time to one day, could you please reply to this. Because that would mean the world to me.

Jake.

Jake subsequently received a reply letter from a 4 RAR (Cdo) warrior.

This year, 2008, more than 150 letters from students of Helensvale State School were sent  to the commandos of 4 RAR (Cdo) in Afghanistan.
