LIVING MEMORIALS TO 4 RAR WARRIORS KILLED IN ACTION

On Wednesday 05 May 2010, Daryl and Felicity Farry presented the 4 RAR Association, Qld with five varieties of Hibiscus plants. Felicity and Daryl of Redland Bay, Qld developed the five new hybrid varieties of Hibiscus which have since been registered by the Australian Hibiscus Society in its role as the International Cultivar Registration Authority.

As the 4 RAR Association, Qld does not have a suitable area in which to place the plants for open display, we approached the RAR Association, Qld and requested that the plants be placed within the RAR National Memorial Walk at Enoggera. The RAR Association, Qld graciously approved and Bunnings donated the potting mix and pots. Descriptive plaques have been placed on the pots naming the plants and acknowledging the contribution by Felicity, Daryl and Bunnings.

Don Zerner and Noel Fairley assisted Daryl and Felicity with the transplanting of the plants into pots. The pots and plants now grace the Diggers Rest area of the RAR National Memorial Walk in Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, Qld.

The five new Hibiscus have been especially named in honour of the five members of C Company 4 RAR who were killed in action in South Vietnam during the battalion’s tour of duty between 1968 and 1969.  Cpl Daryl Farry RAAMC, served with the Battalion in C Company as a medic during that tour.

In honour of, and to perpetuate the names of those warriors of C Company 4 RAR, Felicity has named the Hibiscus:

         Lance Corporal Robert Burns,
         Private Michael Muc,

         Private Michael James Noonan,
         Private Patrick Shane O'Connor, and
         Private Christopher William Roost

The Diggers Rest area was selected as the best position because of the required sunny conditions and the fact that as all battalion associations and many units within Gallipoli Barracks gather at Diggers Rest for various functions and activities, all will see and recognise the Hibiscus as living memorials to the C Company warriors. As people admire and speak of the flowers, the names of our warriors will be spoken aloud and never allowed to be forgotten.
The plants are now available from:
