Noel Robert McPARLAND
Mentioned In Dispatches
Sergeant Robert McParland enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 30 May 1961. He was posted to 4th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment on 12 March 1964. He arrived in South Vietnam with the battalion on 14 may 1968.

He served throughout his twelve months tour as a mortar Fire Controller with D Company. At all times on operations he displayed bravery of a very high order.

He was involved in twenty contacts with the enemy. In all of these contacts his coolness and control under fire was an inspiration to all who served with him. His control and application of supporting fire was exemplary. On a number of occasions his direction of close fire support inflicted significant casualties on the enemy.

Where necessary, he placed himself in exposed positions to observe and control the supporting fire without thought for the personal danger involved. During several actions he directed mortar and artillery fire while under enemy fire. He never hesitated to go to the best position for observation regardless of the risk to himself.

By his continual disregard for his own safety, his devotion to duty and his technical efficiency, Sergeant McParland won the confidence and admiration of all ranks. He undoubtedly saved the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers by his control of prompt and accurate close fire support. He consistently showed himself to be a brave and inspiring leader in the highest traditions of the Australian Army
