Killed in Action; 22 June 1968
Private Michael Wickman was a forward scout in 1 Platoon, V Company which was a company of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR). Because of the attachment of both V and W Companies of the RNZIR, 4RAR was re-rolled as 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) during its tours in South Vietnam.
On 22 June 1968, 1 Platoon, V Company were patrolling from the Horseshoe and following on from a successful contact with an enemy group earlier in the morning, a four man reconnaissance patrol with Private Wickham as the forward scout encountered another three enemy and killed them. They were immediately fired upon by approximately fifteen automatic weapons and Michael was hit by a gunshot wound to the head and neck. He died shortly after from his wounds.
