Private Ralph James Niblett
Killed in Action; 21 September 1971
Private Ralph Niblett, aged 22, from Melbourne, Victoria was engaged to be married and attempting to find a job that he liked when he was called up for National Service on 28 January 1970 and posted to 4RAR. He sailed for South Vietnam with the Battalion in May 1971.
During Operation IVANHOE in Phuoc Tuy Province on 21 September 1971, and during the battle of Nui Le, 11 Platoon was assaulting a heavily defended enemy bunker system when a fusillade of fire was directed at them. Two 11 Platoon soldiers were killed instantly and Ralph was hit in the chest. Despite the sustained efforts of the attached RAAMC medic, Corporal Mick O’Sullivan, to tend to his wounds, Ralph died shortly after.
